The popping sound that commonly follows a spinal adjustment is caused by gas that has been released from a joint capsule by the temporary opening of a joint space. This popping sound is a phenomenon known as “cavitation”. To most people this release feels great, but if the sound is an issue for you please let us know. Many Chiropractic adjustments can be done without causing that sound and are just as effective. Also, unlike what some of our grandmothers told us that popping does not cause arthritis or have any negative effects on our body in general.
No….. Because branches from the same nerve may supply more than one level of the spine, the discomfort originating from one segment may be felt over several segments. However, when you perform self-manipulation, it's usually the hypermobile joints (joints that are moving too much) that are released, while the restricted joints remain restricted. Skilled manipulations performed by a Doctor of Chiropractic are specifically and carefully delivered to the joints that truly need it. The effects of the manipulation are also longer lasting and in turn the urge to self-manipulate should subside.
There are certain instances when spinal adjustment may not be suitable: acute trauma, bone fracture, spinal infection, advanced osteoporosis or metastatic bone disease (bone cancer) are some examples. Our Chiropractors assess and review their patient’s histories carefully to determine if other treatment options should be considered, including referral for further investigations or review and management by other health care professionals.
Scientific research has shown that Chiropractic is particularly effective for treating low back pain, neck pain, and headaches.

We only recommend x-rays if we feel they are necessary and make this decision on an individual basis. The reason we take x-rays is because they act as roadmap for the best course of care to best care your body. They can also help us reveal past injuries, possible underlying causes of discomfort such as spinal curvatures, signs of arthritis, and the degree of joint degeneration.
